Description

This tour offers an unmatched introduction to Canberra’s architectural highlights, focused on its evolution as a ‘city in the landscape’ and its role in pursuing a design ideal. The tour takes in exemplary Australian Modernist and Brutalist works as well as more recently awarded contemporary projects and public realm design.
Highlights include:

  • Mt Ainslie Land axis overview of Canberra as a designed city, envisioned in the 1911 competition winning entry by architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney.
  • Australian Parliament House 1988 by Mitchell, Giurgola and Thorpe Architects
  • National Gallery of Australia and High Court precinct 1982/1980 by Edwards Madigan Torzillo and Briggs Architects /, Col Madigan, Chris Kringas with Harry Howard Landscape Architects

DURATION

Saturday post Conference travel to Canberra and overnight stay at University House ANU (recommended) followed by Sunday 10am – 5pm guided bus tour.


YOUR GUIDE

The tour will be conducted by Canberra architect Ann Cleary, who is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and Senior Lecturer in the architecture program at the University of Canberra. Ann was involved in the Parliament House project over many years and has presented talks on many of the city’s architectural exemplars. Ann’s various roles in relation to the city include co-director of the 2013 AIA Centennial Program and contributor to evolving urban public realm initiatives.


TOUR NOTES
Expected Itinerary:

Saturday: afternoon / evening participants arrive at University House accommodation
Self-directed eateries in nearby Nishi New Acton precinct.

10am Sunday: Ann will meet participants at University House foyer for overview of precinct.
Tour commences with Mt Ainslie land axis overview followed by National Triangle architectural exemplars and then Kingston, Dickson and Arboretum projects as time and weather conditions permit. Lunch will be held somewhere on the tour, e.g. the cafeteria at the National Gallery of Australia. Please bring a warm coat.

This tour is limited to 16 persons.

COST
$90 / pp (includes tour guide and bus travel around Canberra)

Participants arrange their own travel to/from Canberra, an approximately 3-hr drive from Sydney.
Car (Hire or Go-Get), bus, or train and flight options are available. Bus (e.g. Murrays) is usually the cheapest option (return fares approx. $88 leaving Sydney Central Station at 3pm and Canberra 5pm), but bookings should be made well in advance.

Accommodation for Saturday 13th is recommended at mid-century modern University House

Options include:
